Aelius Galenus of Pergamon
129-216 · Middle & Neo-Platonism · Prominent
Galen was a Greek physician who served Roman emperors and became the most copied medical writer of antiquity. Joining Hippocratic medicine to Aristotle's natural philosophy, he read the body as designed: every organ shaped for a job, nothing in you by accident. Health was the balance of the four humors, the body's fluids, and illness their disorder. Europe took his word for a thousand years.
