Portrait of Abu Bakr al-Razi (Rhazes)

Abu Bakr al-Razi (Rhazes)

854–925 · Islamic Philosophy · Prominent

Razi was a Persian physician of Rayy, one of the greatest doctors of the medieval world and its most notorious freethinker. He threw out prophecy and revelation. God hands out reason in equal measure to everyone, so nobody needs a prophet, and taking a thing on authority is no way to believe it. Five things always existed, he held: God, Soul, Matter, Time and Space, with matter built of atoms and the world shaped by a craftsman god.
