Portrait of Zeno of Elea

Zeno of Elea

c.490-430 BC · Early Greek Thought · Prominent

Zeno came from Elea and spent his arguments defending his teacher Parmenides, who held that what is is one and unchanging. Before Achilles can catch the tortoise he has to reach where it was, by which time it has moved, and so on with no end. Zeno spun such puzzles to show that a world of many moving things ends in nonsense, which leaves one motionless Being looking better. Aristotle called him the inventor of dialectic.
