Albert Camus
1913–1960 · Existentialism · Household name
Camus was a French-Algerian writer who built a philosophy out of one gap: you want the world to mean something and the world says nothing back. He called that gap the absurd, and refused both suicide and a leap of faith as ways out of it. What he asked for was conscious revolt, living in full sight of the absurd and affirming life anyway. He asks you to picture Sisyphus at his rock and call the man happy.
