Edmund Husserl
1859-1938 · Phenomenology · Prominent
Husserl founded phenomenology, and his method starts with a refusal: set aside the question of whether the world out there is real, and describe instead how things show up for you. Every thought is a thought of something, always aimed at an object. On that aiming he built a discipline he meant as an exact science of experience, strict enough to put the other sciences on a footing.
