Portrait of Hannah Arendt

Hannah Arendt

1906-1975 · Phenomenology · Renowned

Arendt was a German-Jewish political theorist sent to cover Eichmann's trial in Jerusalem. She found a career functionary where she expected a monster, and gave us the banality of evil for crimes done by people who never stop to think. Her earlier work traced how total rule grew out of the wreckage of Europe's old order, and in The Human Condition she separated labor, work and action.
