Mao Zedong
1893-1976 · Marxism · Household name
Mao was a Chinese revolutionary who bent Marxism-Leninism to fit a country of peasants. Marx expected revolution from factory workers; Mao made one with peasants and a guerrilla army, wearing a stronger enemy down over years of protracted war, and he kept demanding more revolution long after he had won. He founded the People's Republic and ruled China from 1949 as its chairman. His Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution killed tens of millions.
