The six statements

Each axis is measured by six statements answered on a five-point scale. Statements 1, 2 and 5 pull toward Sublation; 3, 4 and 6 toward Concurrence.

  1. Progress happens through conflict and the clash of opposing forces; tension is the engine of change.
  2. History moves forward through genuine contradiction and struggle, not through agreement.
  3. Opposites belong together in a deeper harmony rather than fighting it out to produce something new.
  4. What looks like conflict between opposites is really two parts of a larger wholeness at peace with itself.
  5. The most creative periods in history were times of friction and clash, Renaissance Florence, Weimar Berlin, not periods of harmony.
  6. A great orchestra is not a battle between instruments: each part needs the others, and the whole is a unity, not a struggle.
