Ernesto "Che" Guevara
1928-1967 · Marxism · Household name
Guevara was an Argentine revolutionary who fought in Cuba and trusted revolutionary will over material conditions. Waiting for conditions to ripen was for the bookish: a small armed band could create a revolution by starting one. He wrote of forging a new man moved by duty rather than money. He helped take Cuba in 1959, then went to Bolivia for another guerrilla war. Troops caught him there in 1967 and shot him the next day.
