Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin)
1870-1924 · Marxism · Household name
Lenin was the Russian Marxist who led the Bolshevik seizure of power in October 1917. Workers left to themselves will bargain over wages and stop there, he argued, so a Marxist revolution needs a small disciplined party of full-time professionals to lead them, a vanguard. He fused that doctrine of organization with Marx's materialism, and communist states across the century were built on the design.
