Friedrich Schiller
1759-1805 · Romanticism · Prominent
Schiller was a German poet and philosopher who read Kant hard and spent his last years beside Goethe at Weimar. Duty pulls one way and appetite the other. Beauty is where the two meet, he argued in his Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man, and a person becomes whole in play. He called beauty the highest human good and made art the road to political freedom, to what he called the aesthetic state.
