The six statements

Each axis is measured by six statements answered on a five-point scale. Statements 1, 2 and 5 pull toward Mastery; 3, 4 and 6 toward Harmony.

  1. The natural world is raw material to be shaped by human intelligence and will.
  2. Human progress has always meant pushing past the limits nature imposed and bending the world to human purposes.
  3. Human flourishing means living in alignment with the natural order, not imposing human designs upon it.
  4. The deepest kind of freedom comes from fitting into a larger whole, not from mastering it.
  5. A civilization that clears forests, dams rivers, and builds cities is doing what humans are for; making the given world into something better.
  6. A gardener who works with the soil she actually has grows better crops than one who treats the ground as raw material to be forced into shape.
