Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz
1648-1695 · Latin American · Known
Sor Juana was a Mexican nun of the Hieronymite order, a poet and playwright, and the earliest major philosopher Latin America produced. A bishop rebuked her for studying and she wrote back: the Respuesta a Sor Filotea de la Cruz defends a woman's right to learning, and it made her name. Her long poem Primero Sueño follows a mind climbing through the night toward knowledge and finding the place where knowledge stops.
