The six statements

Each axis is measured by six statements answered on a five-point scale. Statements 1, 2 and 5 pull toward Brain Only; 3, 4 and 6 toward Beyond Brain.

  1. The mind is nothing more than what the brain does; mental states are just physical brain states.
  2. When the brain dies, every thought and experience it ever produced is gone completely.
  3. What it feels like to be you on the inside cannot be fully captured by any description of the brain.
  4. A robot wired to behave exactly like a human might still feel absolutely nothing inside.
  5. When a drug changes someone's mood, that shows the mood is just a brain state; there is no separate mind being altered.
  6. Standing on a mountain and feeling awe: that awe itself is not simply reducible to the firing of neurons.
