Simon Bolivar (El Libertador)
1783-1830 · Latin American · Prominent
Bolívar was a Venezuelan soldier and politician called El Libertador, and Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia came out of Spanish rule behind his armies, the last of them named after him. Peoples leaving colonial despotism need a strong central republic, he argued in the Letter from Jamaica and at Angostura, and federalism was a luxury they could not afford. He decreed the freeing of slaves.
