José Julián Martí Pérez
1853–1895 · Latin American · Prominent
Martí was a Cuban poet, essayist and revolutionary who founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party and was killed in battle at Dos Ríos. In Nuestra América in 1891 he argued that Latin America should govern itself by its own realities, preferring the natural man to imported models, and should resist domination by the United States. An anti-racist who took no sect's side, he held that homeland is humanity.
