Sri Aurobindo (Aurobindo Ghose)
1872–1950 · Modern Indian Thought · Prominent
Aurobindo was an Indian revolutionary nationalist who became a yogi and founded Integral Yoga. He set out an evolutionary spiritual metaphysics in The Life Divine: one Reality buries itself in matter, then climbs back out through life and mind toward a supramental consciousness, a knowing above mind, and a divine life on this earth. He rejected materialism and world-denying asceticism alike, and called the world a real self-showing of the Divine.
