Fyodor Dostoevsky
1821-1881 · Russian Religious Thought · Household name
Dostoevsky was a Russian novelist whose books stage the spiritual crises of a modern age. Crime and Punishment asks what a man becomes once he decides the rules are made for other people, and follows that freedom into murder. Against the self-willing individual and the destruction he brings, Dostoevsky set characters who suffer and love with no power at all: Sonya, Alyosha, the silent Christ of The Brothers Karamazov.
