Portrait of Vladimir Sergeyevich Solovyov (Владимир Сергеевич Соловьёв)

Vladimir Sergeyevich Solovyov (Владимир Сергеевич Соловьёв)

1853-1900 · Russian Religious Thought · Prominent

Solovyov was a Russian philosopher of all-unity: history is God working his way into matter, and it finishes only when humanity consents of its own will to be lifted into God. In The Justification of the Good he grounded morals in three feelings, shame, pity and reverence, called the state organised pity, and argued against Tolstoy that stopping an evildoer by force is a duty. He attacked Russian nationalism and defended the Jews against antisemitism.
