Nezahualcoyotl
1402-1472 · Latin American · Known
Nezahualcoyotl ruled Texcoco and stands as the most celebrated of the Nahua sages, the name on the best-known poetry to survive from Mesoamerica before Columbus. Life is fleeting and passes like a dream, the flower-songs say, and the one thing that holds is 'flower and song' itself, the experience of beauty, which opens for a moment onto the divine and a hidden Giver of Life. Scribes wrote those songs down after the conquest.
