Jane Addams
1860-1935 · American Philosophy · Known
Addams was an American settlement-house pioneer who turned pragmatism toward the urban poor. She and Ellen Gates Starr moved into a decaying Chicago mansion in 1889 and made it Hull House, where immigrant neighbors found classes, childcare and someone who would listen. Democracy for her was a whole way of living beside people, and you cannot act well toward anyone you have not troubled to know.
