Georg Cantor
1845-1918 · Analytic Metaphysics · Prominent
Cantor was a German mathematician who founded set theory and broke a two-thousand-year ban, inherited from Aristotle, on treating an infinite thing as finished. He proved that some infinities are bigger than others: the counting numbers can be listed one after another, the decimals between 0 and 1 cannot. His diagonal argument showed it. Out of that came a ladder of infinite sizes, which he held were there to be found.
