Hồ Chí Minh was a Vietnamese revolutionary who read Lenin and found a weapon against empire, joining Marxism-Leninism to anti-colonial nationalism. Independence first, socialism after: national liberation is the ground everything else has to stand on. He founded Vietnam's communist party in 1930, renamed the Indochinese Communist Party that October, led the August Revolution, and in September 1945 declared Vietnam free of France.
