The six statements

Each axis is measured by six statements answered on a five-point scale. Statements 1, 2 and 5 pull toward Ends; 3, 4 and 6 toward Means.

  1. The right action is whichever produces the best overall outcome.
  2. A strict moral rule that predictably causes greater harm than breaking it would cause should be broken.
  3. Some actions are wrong in themselves no matter how good the results of doing them would be.
  4. The character and intention behind an act are part of what makes it right or wrong.
  5. A doctor who lies to a dying patient to give them peaceful last weeks has done the right thing.
  6. A whistleblower who exposes corruption at great personal cost has done something intrinsically admirable.
