Portrait of Johannes Kepler

Johannes Kepler

1571-1630 · Scientific Revolution · Renowned

Kepler held that geometry is as old as the divine mind. God laid the world out on geometrical patterns and put the same shapes in our heads, so we can read the plan back out. He took his astronomy as a description of the real heavens, against those who treated it as a device for calculating positions. The heavens run like a clockwork, driven by a magnetic push from the turning sun.
