Portrait of Martin Luther

Martin Luther

1483-1546 · Reformation · Household name

Luther was the German reformer who taught justification by grace through faith alone: nothing you do earns God's favour, and faith receives it as a gift. He pushed that further than most readers expect. The human will apart from God cannot choose the good, and everything that happens happens by the necessity of God's will. Scripture alone settles what is true, and every claim to authority has to rest there.
