Portrait of Thomas Müntzer

Thomas Müntzer

c. 1489-1525 · Reformation · Prominent

Müntzer was a German priest who broke with Luther over whether God still speaks. He does, Müntzer held, though only into a soul that terror has emptied first, which makes a comfortable faith the mark of damnation. Scripture is a testimony and the living word comes direct. From 1524 he preached that separating the wheat from the tares was a present task and that the sword must pass to the elect. He was beheaded in 1525.
