Kwame Nkrumah
1909-1972 · Liberation · Known
Nkrumah became the first leader of independent Ghana and a leading theorist of Pan-Africanism. A flag and a parliament count for little, he held, while outsiders still own the mines. Political independence without economic control is no independence at all. His consciencism tried to fold African communal life together with Islamic and Christian influences into a socialism for a continent he wanted united.
