Frederick Douglass (born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey)
c. 1818-1895 · Liberation · Household name
Douglass escaped slavery in Maryland in 1838 and became the fiercest abolitionist speaker and editor of his century. He first held the Constitution a proslavery bargain, then reversed himself in public. By 1851 he argued its text nowhere licensed owning a man, and that slavery could be voted down under it. Power concedes nothing without a demand, he said, and his politics rested on that. He rejected pacifism and emigration alike.
