Malcolm X (El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz), born Malcolm Little
1925-1965 · Liberation · Household name
Malcolm X was an American Muslim minister and Pan-Africanist who spent twelve years as the Nation of Islam’s most effective spokesman before breaking with it in 1964. After making the hajj that April he abandoned the doctrine that whites are devils by nature, writing that he had been forced to toss aside some of his previous conclusions, and founded the secular Organization of Afro-American Unity to carry the case for Afro-Americans out of American civil-rights law and into the United Nations as a human-rights claim. He held that a government which will not protect you forfeits its claim on your obedience, that a people robbed of its history is robbed of its capacity to act, and that anyone deprived of liberty is justified in recovering it by any means necessary. He was assassinated in Harlem in February 1965, eleven months after the split.
