Domingo Faustino Sarmiento
1811-1888 · Latin American · Known
Sarmiento was an Argentine writer and educator who became his country's seventh president. He wrote Facundo while in exile, aimed at the dictator Rosas, and cast his country's history in it as a war between the city and the countryside, civilization against the barbarism he saw in the gaucho warlords. Once in office he acted on that argument and built hundreds of public schools.
