Portrait of Paulo Freire

Paulo Freire

1921-1997 · Liberation · Prominent

Freire was a Brazilian educator who attacked what he called banking education, where a teacher deposits facts into students who sit and receive them. Teaching a farm worker to read meant teaching him to name the conditions of his own life and to see that they could be remade, a waking up Freire called conscientization. Learners are subjects of history. Pedagogy of the Oppressed came out in 1968.
