Futa Helu
1934-2010 · Liberalism · Obscure
Helu was a Tongan philosopher and educator who founded 'Atenisi, an independent university in Tonga where Plato and Tongan thought sat at the same table. Polynesian thought belonged in that conversation as an equal, he held. Trained under the Australian realist John Anderson, he matched Heraclitus on flux to Tongan cosmology, and classical virtue to 'ofa, the Tongan ethic of compassionate love.
