Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi)
774-835 · East Asian Buddhism · Little-known
Kukai founded Japan's Shingon school and its mountain complex at Koya. Buddhahood in this very body, inside one lifetime: he promised it through hand gestures, chanted syllables and holding the cosmic Buddha Mahavairocana in mind until you and he are one, body, speech and thought together. He was also a poet, an engineer, and one of the three calligraphers Japan counts as its greatest.
