Portrait of Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Lucius Annaeus Seneca

4 BC-65 AD · Hellenistic Philosophy · Prominent

Seneca was a Roman statesman and Stoic who tutored Nero and shaped the early years of the reign. He was also the richest Stoic in Rome, preaching indifference to money he had in abundance. His letters to Lucilius boil Stoic ethics down to counsel for a friend: on anger, on grief, on death, and on how much of a short life gets wasted waiting. In 65 AD the emperor ordered him to kill himself, and he did.
