Léopold Sédar Senghor
1906-2001 · Liberation · Prominent
A poet governed Senegal for twenty years. Senghor, a Senegalese writer and philosopher, was the country's first president and a co-founder of the Negritude movement, which held that African cultures know the world by taking part in it and feeling it, a way of knowing that stands equal to European analysis and completes it. He wanted every culture feeding what he called a Civilization of the Universal, a future held in common.
