Husayn ibn Mansur al-Hallaj

Al-Hallaj was a Persian Sufi mystic, one of those who sought the annihilation of the self in God. He cried out in Baghdad: Ana al-Haqq, 'I am the Truth,' taking one of the names of God for himself. To him it was the sound of a soul dissolved into God, with no self left to do the speaking. His judges heard a man claiming divinity for himself. A court with political motives of its own executed him in 922.
