Portrait of Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi

Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi

1207-1273 · Sufism · Renowned

Rumi was a Persian Sufi, a respectable legal scholar in Konya until he met a wandering dervish called Shams, and the friendship burned his old life down. He came out of it an ecstatic poet of divine love and of fana, the annihilation of the ego in God. His Masnavi ranks among the greatest works of mystical poetry and is called the Qur'an in Persian. His followers became the whirling Mevlevi order.
