Kabir (Kabir Das)

Kabir wove cloth in Benares, low caste and a weaver's son, and mocked the Hindu priest and the Muslim mullah in the same breath, refusing the authority of both. He sang devotion to one God with no form, past the names Ram and Allah and past every image and doctrine, a God reached without idols, pilgrimage or ritual. On caste he was blunt: every body is the same flesh before the same God.
