José Carlos Mariátegui
1894–1930 · Marxism · Known
Mariátegui was a Peruvian Marxist who argued in his Seven Interpretive Essays that Peru would never get socialism by importing it from Europe. The ayllu, the Andean village that holds its land in common, and the Inca past standing behind it were proof that another way already existed there. He paired hard class analysis with a belief that a revolution needs a myth before it can move people.
