Claude Adrien Helvétius
1715-1771 · French Enlightenment · Known
Helvétius was a French Enlightenment philosopher and materialist who pushed Locke's empiricism to the wall. The mind holds no ideas at birth, he argued, and every thought you have is a reworked sensation. That made him a radical about schooling and about what it can do to a person. What separates one person from another is education and circumstance, with native endowment doing none of the work.
