Helena Blavatsky

Blavatsky was a Russian-born occultist who founded the Theosophical Society in 1875 and stitched Hindu, Buddhist and Western esoteric material into one cosmic story: spirit falls into matter, then climbs back through lifetime after lifetime. She said hidden Tibetan masters, whom she called Mahatmas, dictated The Secret Doctrine to her out of an ancient wisdom. Her society carried the whole scheme into Western culture.
