Portrait of Giordano Bruno

Giordano Bruno

1548-1600 · Renaissance Humanism · Prominent

Bruno was an Italian philosopher of the Renaissance whom Rome burned at the stake in 1600, for denying the Trinity and the Mass as much as for his sky. He taught that the stars are other suns with living worlds of their own and that the universe has no edge and no centre. God is that infinite whole for Bruno, with no maker standing outside it and no room left for one unique incarnation.
