Hildegard of Bingen
1098-1179 · Christian Mysticism · Prominent
Hildegard was a twelfth-century German abbess, a composer of plainchant and a writer of medical handbooks, and she recorded her visions in a book called Scivias. Creation runs on viriditas, she said, a greening power flowing from a personal God the way sap rises in a plant. The universe on that account is a living system, and every creature sounds one note in a single cosmic symphony of praise.
