Herbert Marcuse
1898-1979 · Marxism · Prominent
Marcuse was a Frankfurt School theorist who read Marx through Freud. One-Dimensional Man asked why a society this rich produced so little rebellion, and answered that it buys consent with comfort, consumer choice, mass media and a managed kind of pleasure, so dissent gets absorbed rather than crushed. He called what is left a comfortable, smooth, reasonable, democratic unfreedom.
