José Rizal
1861-1896 · Liberation · Known
Rizal was a Filipino eye doctor and writer whose two novels broke Spain's story about itself in the Philippines. Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo showed friars and colonial officials abusing Filipinos under Spanish rule, and readers took them as a summons. They became founding texts of Filipino nationalism. Spain shot him in Manila in 1896, which sealed him as the national hero.
