Portrait of Tommaso Campanella

Tommaso Campanella

1568-1639 · Renaissance Humanism · Known

Campanella was an Italian Dominican friar who spent twenty-seven years in Neapolitan prisons after a failed revolt. Out of them came his utopia, The City of the Sun: a commonwealth with no private property and no private families, run by priest-philosophers who time everything by the stars. He also held that every thing in the world, rock included, has some sense and soul of its own.
